just:play & just:live version 3.5, composition:builder version 5.0 - RELEASED

by Manuel Grund
in General

Powerful and reliable broadcast playout on Apple hardware: Version 3.5 - RELEASED!

With version 3.5 of our playout solutions just:live and just:play, we have introduced native Apple Silicon and macOS Monterey support, underpinning our repeated commitment to the Apple platform safeguarding our customer’s investment in our solutions which is paramount to us. This means that all our playout solutions will run natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel-based Mac hardware. As for our ingest solutions, version 3.5 will still support macOS Catalina (10.15.x) and macOS Big Sur (11.x) to ensure full deployment flexibility.

Among many usability improvements and stability enhancements that will benefit daily operations, version 3.5 of just:live and just:play feature native UHDp60 playout support for qualified AJA and Blackmagic Design devices on Apple Silicon hardware, extended HTTP events to include both GET and POST methods to support more web services, full support for frame-accurate SCTE104 Splice Events, which can be played out by scheduling them on an optional Event layer by inserting SCTE-104 events into the VANC data of the SDI output signal., a new channel configuration panel with an additional “Failover” tab allowing you to define the event presets that should be executed when the channel is in either “Primary”, “Redundant” or “Failover” state, support for hardware genlock for AJA devices and reference LTC timecode to sync the master time via audio input or AJA’s LTC input port, an improved handling to restore window positions and last but not least a new version 5.0 of our real-time graphics template creator composition:builder with native Apple Silicon and macOS Monterey support.

just:in mac version 5.1 - RELEASED

by Manuel Grund
in General

High Quality Ingest on Apple hardware: just:in mac 5.1 - RELEASED!

just:in mac 5.1 is our macOS-based client-server ingest solution designed to capture SDI, HDMI, NDI®5, multicamera, and VTR sources using industry-standard Crash, Batch, or Schedule recording modes. With the latest release of just:in mac 5.1, we have laid the foundation for current and future Apple hardware and software versions and thus confirmed our repeated commitment to the Apple platform. just:in mac 5.1 is now macOS Monterey (12.x) certified and fully qualified to run natively on the new Apple Silicon architecture. The combination of this highly efficient and powerful new system architecture from Apple and our professional ingest solution offers many advantages and benefits to both our customers and our future innovations. Version 5.1 will still support macOS Catalina (10.15.x) and macOS Big Sur (11.x) to ensure full deployment flexibility and safeguard our customer’s investment in our solutions.

New with version 5.1 of just:in mac is the highly requested HDR metadata support (HLG and PQ transfer characteristics) for Apple ProRes 422 HQ / MOV recording workflows in combination with either AJA or Blackmagic Design video input devices. Based on the valued feedback of our customers and partners, we further improved our Schedule mode by moving the Calendar section from the Channel Settings into the Channel Inspector, making it even more efficient and flexible to use.

To increase operational reliability, the ability to lock parts of the just:control interface was extended by introducing the ability to lock the complete user interface to prevent any unintended user interactions.

By unanimous request, a well-known feature from older just:in mac versions, namely “LTC over Audio In” has found its way back into just:in mac version 5.1. This handy feature allows you to use a Line in USB adapter to sync all the recording channels with an external LTC timecode source over an audio input and facilitates the workflow also for multicamera ISO-recording use.

In combination with Sonnet Technologies' new DuoModo Expansion Systems, just:in mac version 5.1 is the perfect solution to capture multiple HD and one UHD channel(s) on a single Mac mini M1, when using a qualified container/codec combination. The Sonnet DuoModo Expansion System brings our customers the flexibility to combine the xMac mini module, with up to an optional 16 TB of internal storage and the Echo III module that can accommodate PCIe 3.0 SDI video device cards from AJA or Blackmagic Design, and for dual networking needs, adapters such as the Sonnet Solo or Presto 10 GbE cards. This highly efficient hardware and software bundle is the ideal solution for budget-sensitive, yet professional broadcast ingest operations. The Sonnet Technologies DuoModo Expansion System is available as a desktop or rack-mount enclosure.

For additional information, please visit:

https://www.toolsonair.com/products/ingest/justin/

or

https://www.toolsonair.com/products/ingest/whats-new-in-justin-and-livecut/ respectively.

This version requires a v5.x activation code and all previously generated codes (v4.0 and below) will no longer work. Please contact ToolsOnAir for new activation codes.

Vienna, Austria, September 2020 – After months of intensive development, the ToolsOnAir team is proud to announce new versions of its acclaimed broadcast solutions just:in linux, just:play/just:live and just:store, featuring many improvements and additional functionalities requested by customers and in line with current industry standards.

What’s new in the upcoming just:in linux version 5.0:

Amongst many additions and improvements the new version of just:in linux introduces NDI® and SRT input support, extended UHD (4K) and UHD2 (8K) recording abilities, a new user and multi-viewer template management, automatic output conversion of incoming signals and markers for Adobe Premiere Pro.

“The focus in version 5.0 was put on implementing customer requests as well as complying with industry standards and revise the just:in linux hardware to allow for best-in-class performance” says Christian Schabasser, Senior Product Manager Ingest solutions at ToolsOnAir.

What’s new in the upcoming just:play/just:live version 3.0:

The new version 3.0 of ToolsOnAir playout solutions just:play and just:live has been partially re-written to accommodate the advantages of macOS Catalina and ensure readiness for future macOS versions to come. Amongst many usability improvements version 3.0 will feature full SDK support for qualified AJA and Blackmagic Design devices and introduce just:control as the new main user interface in order to unify the control user interface for both ingest and playout solutions.

“The development efforts for version 3.0 of our playout solutions were concentrated on improving the user experience by unifying the control interface for all ingest and playout applications and elevate the core code basis to cope with current and future macOS released, in order to secure our current and future customer’s investments in our technology for years to come” says Georg Deisting, Senior Product Manager Playout solutions at ToolsOnAir.

What’s new in the upcoming just:store version 4.0:

The new version 4.0 just:store targets users and administrators that need improved  setup capabilities and better status visibility of their just:store storage solution. Featuring a redesigned user interface as well as introducing powerful new additions such as an extensive REST API, Network Bandwidth Management for combined read and write operations and an improved Authentication management, just:store is an excellent choice for broadcast professionals that require speed, reliability and dedicated optimisations for ingest, editing and playout scenarios at a very competitive price.

AJA driver version v14.3 and higher not compatible with just:out

by Georg
in General

Currently the AJA driver versions 14.3 and higher are not compatible with just:play and just:live. We recommend to download and use AJA driver version  14.2.1 until AJA provides the QT Components with an extra installer, like they announced in their Release Notes.

From the AJA Release Notes v14.3:

QuickTime components are now legacy and have been removed from the AJA unified desktop software package and thus, are no longer installed by default. If you still wish to obtain and install the QuickTime components, you can find the package under the support section for your AJA product, inside “Software Archive”.

NEW FINAL VERSION ANNOUNCEMENT - just:Live/Play v2.5

by Georg
in General
We are thrilled to announce the final release of just:Live/Play v2.5! This version includes and latest and greatest features developed over the past few months, many of of which came right from your requests, the users. This major release includes:

Version 2.5 Changes - just:live & just:play
  • Stability and speed improvements, several bugfixes.
  • Support for the play out of movies wrapped into an .mkv container format.
  • Extended "Stay Alive" in the Tools On Air System Preferences pane to included "scheduled restarting" of all applications.
  • The size of the proxy preview sent from just:out to just:connect and then onto just:live/play can now be defined in just:connect in the channel's format settings.
  • With multiple "on-line" channels in just:connect, the proxy previews in just:live/play now function for all channels, not just the currently selected channel in just:connect.
  • When reading metadata for the library, a "sidecar" XML file is automatically generated for each file to store the metadata. When the metadata is again requested (e.g. when starting just:play again, or running just:play on a second system), the metadata will be read from this sidecar file instead of the file itself.
  • It is now possible to define a "Filler movie" in the "Advanced" tab for a channel in just:connect. Once defined, the filler movie will play in a loop whenever just:out detects that no movie is currently playing on the main video layer.
  • Added two additional fields to the "Advanced" tab in just:connect, both related to automatically re-starting just:out under certain conditions.
  • For channels using redundancy, if the master engine fails the slave engine will now send all diagnostics (including the proxy preview) to just:connect and then onto just:live/play.Optional failover solution based on an AJA Kumo switcher or a BMD ATEM switch.

Version 2.5 Changes - just:live only

  • There is now a complete new control area available in just:live, where the status of the channel's main engine is now displayed with a "traffic light" system for buffer and CPU temperature. Yellow lights mean a warning, while red lights mean something requires immediate attention.
  • It is now possible to drag and drop items scheduled in the timeline to re-order them.
  • It is now possible to double-click an item or items in the library to add it/them to the currently selected folder on the workbench.
  • Start action - This action can be defined like the finished actions and could include a GPI trigger or BMD ATEM commands but maybe also execute on:core workflows.
  • New Finished Action option (like the loop) to trigger a workflow or event.

Version 2.5 Changes - just:play only

  • Optional just:next to execute the jump to next on several channels with a single mouse click.
  • Placeholder clips within a playlist can now be automatically "linked" or updated with a file. To achieve this, ensure that the placeholder's name matches exactly the name of the movie that will be created at some point (including file extension).
  • The status of the channel's main engine is now displayed with a "traffic light" system for buffer and CPU temperature. Yellow lights mean a warning, while red lights mean something requires immediate attention.
  • Double-clicking an item in the library now adds it to the selected playlist in the workbench.
  • A color code can now be used to turn an infinite graphics off. Such a color code can be defined on finder level or within the just:play user interface.

Mouse Over/Exit Preferences: You can now define if the TC Area, the Audio Bars, the Buffer Status and the Toolbar Area are shown or not, if the mouse moves over or exits a Channel Preview window.

Batch Mode: Batch Mode enables customers to control multiple VTR decks within one interface to capture multiple tapes.

Connection Window: The Connection Window allows you to save Channel connections to ease up connecting to Channels.

New Timecode & Channel Name Display: The "t/n" Timecode option displays the Timecode in the top left corner and the Channel name in the top right corner of the Preview. During recording you can also check the elapsed recording time by clicking on the Timecode field.

Multi-Selection of Channel Previews: You can select multiple Channels Previews in the just:in user interface at the same time and then change the Inspector settings for these Channels.

Channel Border Thickness: You can change the border thickness of Channels in the just:in user interface. This helps you to see the state of each Channel easily.

Running v12 of Teamviewer and just:out on the same mac causes a CoreAudio related just:out crash every time a user logs in/out. We strongly recommend to use Teamviewer HOST v11 which does not cause this crash and which can be downloaded from here: TeamViewer Host
